For a number of years, the High School Art Exhibit has been a popular feature of Art on the Square and has grown to be one of the country’s largest independent student exhibits. Each year about 42 Southern Illinois high school art programs are invited to participate. From this pool an average of 200 students apply with their “masterpieces”.
This year they will be vying for over $2,500 in prizes including the Illinois American Sponsorship Award. Other cash prizes include the Art on the Square Committee Award and the Volunteers Choice Award. A unique award that is also presented involves the participating Art on the Square exhibitors. They evaluate and then ballot on the students’ pieces. They also offer critical evaluations for the students.
Students are also encouraged to enter the Congressional Art Competition run for the 12th District by Congressman Jerry Costello. Students can apply to both the Art on the Square exhibit and the Congressional Competition with the same piece. The prize for this competition is a "$5,000 yearly renewable scholarship to an art college. The winning artwork is displayed in Washington D. C. in the U. S. Capital’s Cannon Tunnel.
