Art on the Square has
just been named to the top tier of art fairs throughout the
nation by Art Fair Source Book. This publication from Portland,
Oregon, considered over 600 annual art fairs. In this national
group, Belleville’s Art on the Square
ranked #5.
Among the top 10 art fairs, five-year-old Art
on the Square is by far the youngest. The other winners
include Kansas City’s Plaza show which has been going
for 75 years; the 54-year-old Sausalito, California art fair
and the 47-year-old Ann Arbor, Michigan show.
“We have never seen an art fair start from scratch and
rise to the top so quickly. The people in Belleville should
be very proud of what they are doing,” stated Art Fair
Source Book’s publisher Greg Lawler.
Since it inception Art on the Square
has consistently ranked well among art fairs nationwide. The
first show of 2002 was listed in the top 50; 2003 was rated
in the top 25; in 2004 Art on the Square
was named the Best Small Town Art Fair in
the Nation; the 2005 show placed in the top 20.
Art on the Square Director Patty
Gregory is elated with this most recent accolade.
“This is an accomplishment for our committee and the community
both. I am so proud of the volunteers who work so tirelessly
to create Art on the Square, the sponsors
who sustain us and the City of Belleville that sparkles each
May when we welcome artists and visitors. I will always be grateful
to our former mayor, Mark Kern who was able to see the potential
for this dream long before it was a reality. His leadership
put us on the path and the continued cooperation of Mayor Mark
Eckert is pushing us to the top.”
Art on the Square will circle the
artist tents around the downtown Square next on
May 18, 19 and 20, 2007.
